Icarus

This experimental charcoal animation was created based on the tragedy of Icarus. In this animation, the incessant flapping of his wings seems to be a dance that includes crying and madness caused by dashed hopes.

However, at the same time, this dance could be seen as an energetic action conveying his determination and persistence. I wanted to express stirring human energy and draw a positive human being who rises to the challenge in the face of inherent limitations.

I approached this animation as a visual art expanded from painting. I repeatedly drew and erased using charcoal, erasers, and my hands on a gigantic wooden board covered by gesso, which is one of the painting materials.
